Furniture Painting: Do I Need to Sand my Furniture Before I Paint It?

Do I Sand It or Not?

Okay! You got a piece and you want to paint or refinish it to give it a face lift or a brand new coat of paint to make it look fresh.

But the Question, Do I really need to Sand It? Short Answer...No!!!!!!! Paint will cover anything up and give you a great new look, But....
Will your paint stick or adhere if I don't sand my piece first?
So now for the Long Answer, (Well we'll make it not Long) There are conditions where you do not need to sand a piece first and situations where you do noy. So keep reading to know the different between the two. It will save you time, money, and a BIG Dusty Mess!

YES! You need to sand your piece if...

  • The Surface is slick and Shiny
  • if the previous Paint job has brush strokes & rough spots
  • To get a very smooth surface before refinishing & Repainting
  • To Create Rough Spots for a Vintage, Shabby Chic, or Farmhouse Look
If you find your piece in one of these situations, but you do not want to sand... We recommend a product we use instead of sanding called Slick Stick!

Now for the Situations we love to See!

No!!! Skip the Sanding and Just Paint!

The most beautiful words you want to hear if your piece is in the following condition:
  • The piece has a flat, matte, or satin finish (AKA-Not Shiny)
  • If you want the paint to chip off some or be easy to Wet-Distress
  • The furniture is grungy looking and YOU LOVE IT!
  • And Lastly, when you are just plain lazy and you Don't care if it sticks or Not. lol
